What this card does

An Item is a card you can play any number of times in a turn. Ultra Ball asks you to discard two cards from your hand first. Then you search your whole deck for any one Pokémon at all and put it into your hand.

You play it whenever you need a specific Pokémon now, whether a starter, an attacker, or a helper. The cost is real, you give up two cards, so play it when finding the right Pokémon is worth more than the cards you let go.

What it does

Ultra Ball

You can use this card only if you discard 2 other cards from your hand. Search your deck for a Pokémon, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

Ultra Ball lets you discard two cards from your hand, then search your deck for any one Pokémon and take it into your hand. It matters because it is the most reliable way to find exactly the Pokémon you need, with no limit on which one. The catch is the two-card cost, so it has a price.

Which deck it belongs in

A staple in almost every deck. If a deck plays Pokémon, and they all do, it usually plays Ultra Ball.

Strengths
  • Finds any Pokémon in the deck, no restrictions
  • Reliable and consistent, turning a stuck hand into the card you need
  • Discarding can be a bonus when you want certain cards in the discard pile
Watch out for
  • Costs two cards from your hand, which hurts when your hand is already thin
  • Useless if you have fewer than two other cards to discard

Pairs well with

Night Stretcher
Night Stretcher

Ultra Ball discards cards you may want back, and Night Stretcher can recover a Pokémon from the discard pile later.

Buddy-Buddy Poffin
Buddy-Buddy Poffin

Poffin finds the small Basics, while Ultra Ball reaches the bigger or one-off Pokémon Poffin cannot.

Pro tip

Discard cards you actually want in your discard pile, or duplicates you no longer need, so the cost works in your favour.

Good to know

It is a Trainer card with no HP or attacks. It is a search tool, the way most decks reliably find their Pokémon.

Note for the parent

A common Item. Most decks run three to four copies, the maximum allowed of any one card being four.
