A bit of friendly maths

Draw calculator

Good deck-building is partly maths. This shows the real chance of drawing the card you need, and how often a hand goes wrong. It is a lovely way to show a child that the numbers behind the game make sense.

Will I draw my card?

Set how many copies are in the deck and how many cards you will have seen, and we work out the real odds.

Chance of a redraw (mulligan)

If an opening hand has no Basic Pokémon, the player shows it and draws a fresh seven. More Basic Pokémon in the deck means this happens less.

Chance of having to redraw
19.1%
About 1 in 5 games

Keeping this under 15% usually means around 14 or 15 Basic Pokémon in a 60 card deck. Many decks settle for roughly one game in five, about 12 Basics, as a fair balance.

How it works

The tool uses the same maths card players call the hypergeometric calculation: drawing from a shuffled deck without putting cards back. It is exact, not a guess. A good rule of thumb is that four copies of a card in a 60 card deck gives roughly a 40% chance of seeing one in your opening seven, which is why players add search cards to find the rest.
