What this card does

Munkidori is a Basic Pokémon, so it comes straight down with no evolving. It is small, but its job is clever and it shows up in several decks that use Darkness Energy.

It keeps your attackers healthy and your opponent's attackers wounded, all without attacking. Good players use it every single turn.

Signature ability

Adrena-Brain

Once during your turn, if this Pokémon has any Darkness Energy attached, you may move up to 3 damage counters from 1 of your Pokémon to 1 of your opponent's Pokémon.

If Munkidori has any Darkness Energy attached, it can move up to three damage counters (30 damage) off one of your Pokémon and onto one of your opponent's. It heals your side and hurts theirs in one move, and it stacks neatly with Dragapult's spread damage to set up knockouts.

Which deck it belongs in

A flexible support piece. It is a regular in the Dragapult ex deck and in other decks built around Darkness Energy.

Strengths
  • Heals your side and damages theirs in one move
  • Comes down instantly as a Basic Pokémon
  • Works every single turn for free
Watch out for
  • Needs Darkness Energy attached to work
  • Low 110 HP, so it is fragile if attacked directly
  • Moves only small amounts of damage, so it supports rather than wins

Pairs well with

Dragapult ex
Dragapult ex

Nudges Dragapult's spread damage into knockout range.

Helps line up the exact totals Cursed Blast needs.

Pro tip

Use Munkidori before you attack, not after. Moving damage first often reveals an extra knockout you would have missed.

Top players who use this deck

Dragapult ex is the most successful deck of the season, with event wins including the Korean League Final, Lima, Los Angeles, Champions League Aichi and Prague. At Australia's Melbourne Regional it took first, second and several Top 8 places, and Australian Junior Bayzen A. finished 5th.

From the Pokédex

Munkidori is one of the Loyal Three from the Teal Mask story. Its mischievous, mind-bending nature suits a card all about quietly shifting things around.

Note for the parent

Inexpensive and widely printed. A single copy is usually enough, so this is one of the easier staples to pick up.
