What this card does

It sits on the bench as the basic Pokémon you need before you can play Noctowl.

Its Insomnia ability keeps it safe from the Asleep condition while it waits to evolve.

Signature ability

Insomnia

This Pokémon can't be Asleep.

Insomnia is a simple, always-on ability that stops Hoothoot from ever being Asleep. That means an opponent cannot use a sleep effect to stall it. It is a small protective touch on an early-stage card.

Which deck it belongs in

It is the entry point for any deck that wants Noctowl, most commonly Dragapult ex builds.

Strengths
  • Cheap and easy basic to start the Noctowl line
  • Cannot be put to sleep by the opponent
  • Comes down on turn one with no cost
Watch out for
  • On its own it does very little beyond a 20-damage Tackle
  • With only 80 HP it falls quickly to stronger attackers

Pairs well with

Noctowl
Noctowl

It evolves into Noctowl, the Trainer-fetching engine.

Pro tip

Get Hoothoot onto the bench early so Noctowl is ready to evolve the following turn.

Top players who use this deck

Dragapult ex is the most successful deck of the season, with event wins including the Korean League Final, Lima, Los Angeles, Champions League Aichi and Prague. At Australia's Melbourne Regional it took first, second and several Top 8 places, and Australian Junior Bayzen A. finished 5th.

From the Pokédex

Hoothoot is known for standing on one foot and keeping a steady internal sense of time.

Note for the parent

This is a stepping-stone card. Its job is to be evolved, so the real value arrives once Noctowl is played on top of it.
