Weakness, and why type matters

Getting good · 3 min read

Every Pokémon has a Weakness printed on its card. If you attack a Pokémon with the type it is weak to, you do double damage.

That is a huge deal, so it is worth learning.

How Weakness works

Look near the bottom of a card for the Weakness symbol. If your attacker is that type, double your damage before taking anything else away.

So a 120 damage attack becomes 240 against a Pokémon weak to your type. That can be a one-hit knockout.

Use it in your games

Before a game, think about what your Pokémon are weak to. During a game, look at what your opponent is weak to.

  • Check your opponent's Weakness before you attack.
  • Try to keep your weak Pokémon out of the front when you can.
  • Some decks are chosen just to beat a popular type.
Remember
  • Weakness doubles your damage.
  • Check the Weakness on both sides every game.
  • A good matchup can win the game on its own.
